Well, my MacBook Pro is most likely dead. It happened very suddenly and randomly... The battery ran out of power and once it was recharged, nothing. A friend is trying to fix it, but he says it doesn't look good. :( also, our Internet connection has been having fits. We may have it solved now, but we're not totally sure yet.

Considering all this, I am reading when I can from my iPod, and postlude rarely. Things are pretty good though... We're almost ready for Christmas, which should be fun with Samuel this year. Samwise is doing well and I can't wait to get doc back home. That is a story for another day though.

None of what you have said leaves me understanding why your macbook doesn't simply need a new battery. Might be worth getting a second opinion? Or going to the library and researching it yourself? Computers are actually not as complicated as most techy people lead you to believe. I know you have a good head on your shoulders and if you call around and say you're thinking about getting it fixed but need to find the best price and then ask some questions...calling a few different places might yield some useful answers.

In the meantime, hope you have a great holiday and enjoy being offline. :)

Could the battery be the problem even if it won't turn on while plugged in? I mean, I know I need a new battery, I just haven't been able to make myself spend the money on one.

My tech friend is quite practical so I trust that he is not making this more complicated than necessary. I'm honestly getting fed up with Mac... I'm so tired of how expensive everything is, from the computer right down to their special wires. And nothing of theirs is standardized. They say they update things like power cords for improvements, but I think it is so they can make more money. It's really frustrating right now.

Yep. Macs get usability so so right, that then they have you over a barrel and can do everything in such a way as to lock you in and you *still* think twice about getting a PC.

There's definitely trade-offs, I've had to use both for various software teams, and I adored my macbook pro while I had one...because I wasn't paying for it, and it wasn't my personal use computer.

Honestly, a chromebook covers so many of the bases these days. Might be my next portable computer. Will still need a desk top for more intense actually writing code kinds of things, but this covers most of the rest of what I do. Helluva lot cheaper than a Mac. The people I know that bought one love them. They had a bug or two early on but from what I hear they've been fixed. Ask your friend about them.

Yes, with Macs I believe it can be needing a new battery even if they won't turn on plugged in. At least with the newer ones. There might be something helpful here? (If you can close all of the ads that pop up that is.) Every tech guy knows different things; I spend my days hanging out with tech guys and I cannot tell you the number of times I've seen one swear up and down that he knew what he was doing and xyz thing could not be fixed...only to have another tech guy fix it in 10 minutes flat because they had read the right article. I have never seen tech guys try to swindle people like car mechanics, but they are often convinced they know everything when in fact they know some things. Worth getting checked out by multiple people, just sayin'. Macbooks are expensive and if you can sell yours on ebay or keep on using it, you're definitely in a better position than having it be dead.

Lots of good advice. Thank you! I will talk with my friend about the battery and such and my hubby about the chrome book. I would be sad to not use Mac, but this is getting ridiculous! We just had to replace the power adapter and because the laptop is a 2008 model, that was a real bitch...for a stinking power adapter!! I don't like how fast technology changes, but come on! A power adapter shouldn't be obsolete in 5 years.

Planned obsolescence is one of the things that pisses me off most. Pet peeve...and yeah that is ridiculous!
